Recap of January Meeting

The member's meeting in January provided a forum for those present to discuss the activities and policies of the The Italian Club and to make suggestions for future endeavors. The forum was so successful that the officers and directors of the Club agreed that a similar meeting would be held at least once a year from now on. Many thanks to everyone who participated.

Some of the topics discussed at the meeting included:

unification of all Italians and Italian organizations in St. Louis;

the Club's contribution to the Italian community;

speaking the Italian language at the meetings, designating a few tables as "Italian speaking only" at each meeting, and putting one person fluent in Italian at each table to speak Italian only during the meeting;

future programs;

whether to let non-Italians join the Club,

whether to have a separate type of membership for non-Italians, and whether to keep current policy intact and promote membership to Italians;

expanding the role of The Pannetone Players;

developments regarding an Italian Cultural Center and Confederation;

planning Club outings in addition to regular monthly meetings;

expanding participation in Club by members.

Tracing Your Italian Family

A Special Italian Club Conference

John Forti, a widely experienced genealogist, spoke at a Club meeting during the last year on Italian genealogy. Based on the number of questions generated and the amount of interest and discussion shown at that meeting, the Club, in conjunction with the Genealogy Society of St. Louis and the Sicilian Cultural Association has decided to sponsor an afternoon conference on tracing Italian genealogy. The program will include practical presentations on how to gather information about your family at home, how to find resources about your family history in St. Louis, the United States and in Italy, how to organize collected family data, and a discussion of how the personal computer and internet can be used to collect information. Samples of forms (in both English and Italian) that you could send to collect information from various sources in Italy will be available free. The overall emphasis will be on practical discussions of actual examples. Speakers, in addition to Mr. Forti, will include Ann Fleming, President, Genealogy Society of St. Louis, and Peter Puleo, Vice President of the Italian Club of St. Louis. There is no charge for this valuable and important meeting.

Conosci Il Tuo Onomastico?

In addition to their birthday or "compleanno", Italians celebrate their "onomastico" which is the feast day of the saint after whom they were named. For example, although my birthday is May 6, my onomastico is June 2, the feast of St. Eugene (this is an easy date for me to remember because it is also the date of the Italian National Day). Our Treasurer, Barbara Klein, thoughtfully provided a little calendar which we have attached to this issue of La Rondine and which shows the various feast days throughout the year. We thought you would find it of interest. Grazie mille, stimata tesoriere.

Congratulazioni

Congratulations to our Secretary, Mary Jo Bertani on passing the Patent Bar examination required of attorneys who wish to practice as patent lawyers. Mary Jo is with the firm of Haverstock, Garrett & Roberts.

Congratulations also to member Gloria Sparagna Smith and her husband, Dr. Patrick Smith on the acceptance of their daughter, Cecilia (now Sister Mary Elizabeth Smith) as a cloistered contemplative nun in the Monastery of St.

Clare in South County. Sister Mary Elizabeth is a 1994 graduate of St. John the Baptist Preparatory High and was Student Council President and a recipient of the Archbishop May Service award.

We wish to extend our sympathy to the family of Dr. Joseph Gagliardo who died on January 26, 1998. Dr. Gagliardo was the father of Mary Jo Colagiovanni, wife of member Joseph Colagiovanni, Honorary Vice Consul of Italy in St. Louis.

St. Louis Columbus Day Corporation Representative

The St. Louis Columbus Day Corporation is an organization made up of the various Italian-American organizations in the Saint Louis community. The primary activities of this group is to sponsor such annual activities as the Columbus Day parade and festival in Berra Park and the Miss Columbus pageant. Along with all other Italian-American organizations, the Italian Club is represented on the Board of the St. Louis Columbus Day Corporation. For the past year, the Italian Club's representative has been member Norman Merlotti. For personal reasons, Norman has decided to step down from this position. Angela Mazzola has graciously agreed to fill this role. Many thanks to Norman for the important contribution which he has made both to the Club as well as to the Italian community in general by serving in this position for the past year.

Carnevale - February 15

The Sicilian Cultural Association of St. Louis will hold its annual Carnevale on February 15 at the south county Elks Club in Crestwood. Tickets are $30 per person and include an open bar, dinner, entertainment and dancing after dinner.

ADDIO A GIORGIO STREHLER

Il mondo del teatro italiano piange la morte del suo più grande maestro, Giorgio Strehler, stroncato da un infarto a 76 anni a Lugano. Strehler ha dato lustro all'Italia come pochissimi altri uomini di spettacolo e le sue regie hanno sempre costituito alcuni dei momenti più alti che quest'arte abbia raggiunto nel mondo negli ultimi cinquant'anni. Strehler nacque il 14 agosto 1921 a Barcola, in provincia di Trieste, figlio di Bruno Strehler e Alberta Lovric, celebre violinista nota con lo pseudonimo di Albertina Ferrari. Trasferitosi a Milano con la madre all'età di 8 anni, fu lì che completò gli studi e si iscrisse all'Accademia dei Filodrammatici. Dopo il diploma, conseguito nel 1940 con il primo premio della classe di recitazione, entrò subito a far parte di varie compagnie come attore. E' la stagione in cui conobbe Paolo Grassi, Mario Feliciani, Rosita Lupi e Franco Parenti. Durante la guerra fu internato nel campo di concentramento di Murren, in Svizzera, dove incontrò Luigi Einaudi, Amintore Fanfani, Dino Risi, Franco Brusati e Concetto Marchesi, personalità con le quali collaborò per la realizzazione di manifestazioni culturali. E' di questo periodo la decisione di Strehler di fondare la Compagnie Des Masques con attori europei, per la quale, con lo pseudonimo di Georges Firmy, fu incaricato della regia e scenografia del Caligola di Albert Camus e dell' Assassinio nella cattedrale di Thomas Eliot. Al ritorno in Italia, una volta terminata la guerra, diventò critico teatrale del quotidiano Milano Sera ed entrò nel Partito Socialista Italiano. Nel 1947 abbandonò il teatro privato per fondare, al fianco di Paolo Grassi, il Piccolo Teatro di Milano, primo esempio di teatro stabile italiano a gestione pubblica, di cui continuò ad essere la guida quasi ininterrottamente fino alle sue dimissioni nel dicembre 1996. Allievo di Jouvet, Strehler incontrò Brecht nel 1955, e i risultati restano indimenticabili ne L'opera da tre soldi, Vita di Galileo e L'anima buona di Sezuan.

Precursore dell'idea di un'Europa unita e aperta allo scambio intellettuale, Strehler ha percorso i palcoscenici dell'Europa con lo sforzo continuo e coerente di una tolleranza e una giustizia sociale senza le quali la libertà e la democrazia sono valori formali. Ne sono testimonianza sia la scelta dei testi in repertorio (da Shakespeare a Gozzi, da Cecov a Goldoni, da Ibsen a Toller, da Pirandello a Marivaux), sia la continuità con la quale sin dal 1948 ha presentato sui palcoscenici stranieri gli spettacoli del Piccolo. Oltre a spettacoli di prosa, Giorgio Strehler allestì più di quaranta opere musicali i cui compositori vanno da Verdi a Mozart, da Beethoven a Prokofiev. Nel corso della sua carriera teatrale, Strehler ha ricevuto i premi più prestigiosi d'Europa: è stato Senatore della Sinistra Indipendente per una legislatura, Grande Ufficiale e Cavaliere di Gran Croce della Repubblica Italiana, Comandeur de la Legion d'Honneur, Grand Officiel de l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres della Repubblica Francese, ed è stato insignito di una lunga lista di riconoscimenti, tra cui la Croce al Merito dell'ex Repubblica Federale Tedesca, e numerose lauree honoris causa.

10. Bottega di Andrea della Robbia. Mater Dolorosa. (Terra cotta, circa 1525) Andrea della Robbia (Firenze 1435-1525) ottenne fama e successo a Firenze e nella adiacente regione toscana con terracotte policrome smaltate, generalmente di soggetto religioso. Andrea era il nipote del famoso ceramista Luca della Robbia (1400-1482), che lo accolse nella sua casa quando il giovane Andrea rimase orfano di entrambi i genitori, e gli insegnò il suo mestiere. Col tempo Andrea divenne il padrone della bottega, che dava impiego anche ai suoi cinque figli e a numerosi apprendisti, ma non raggiunse mai la fama dello zio. Quest'ultimo aveva perfezionato la tecnica dei ceramisti di maiolica, già conosciuta in Italia nel primo Quattrocento, introducendo colori vivi e luminosi e sviluppando uno smalto più resistente.

Andrea continuò la tradizione familiare e creò ceramiche ben disegnate e originali. La Madonna è qui rappresentata come una donna di una certa età, con rughe evidenti e la fronte corrugata dal dolore. Il realismo di questa ceramica è molto simile a quella di altri lavori di Andrea, come la Madonna che fa parte della Crocifissione nella chiesa di Santa Maria Primavera a Fiesole, ma alcune imperfezioni nell'esecuzione la fanno attribuire agli apprendisti piuttosto che al Maestro Andrea. Lo stile è in accordo con il tipo di fervore religioso ispirato da Giacomo Savonarola, di cui Andrea era seguace, e non con la religione più intellettule e razionale che a quel tempo permeava il Cinquecento fiorentino.

Italian Community Band Concert - March 29

The Italian Community Band of St. Louis will perform the fourth annual Larry Mantese Memorial Concert on Sunday, March 29, 1998 at the Shaw VPA Community Education Center, 5329 Columbia Avenue (at Macklind). The special performance will begin at 6:30 PM with music selections by the Concert Band which will play until 7:30 PM. The dance band segment will begin at 7:45 PM and continue until approximately 9:30 PM.

Tickets are five dollars per person and may be obtained from Italian Band members, by calling the Shaw VPA Community Education Center (776-4327) or from Mike Petrillo (638-7297).
