Chicago - Dal giorno 8 dicembre 2001 Mantova e Madison (Wisconsin) sono ufficialmente citta' gemelle. In una cerimonia organizzata dai promotori dell'accordo, il sindaco di Madison Susan Bauman ha firmato il "Sister City Agreement", unitamente al console generale d'Italia Enrico Granara, su delega del sindaco di Mantova, Gianfranco Burchiellaro. L'accordo nasce sotto gli auspici di tre associazioni locali: l'Italian Workmen's Club, l'Italian American Women's Club, la Greenbush Foundation e delle seguenti organizzazioni italo-americane: WisItalia e la NIAF. L'evento ha avuto una notevole risonanza sulla stampa locale: oltre al canale televisivo CBS, anche il 'Capital Times' ha dato ampio risalto alla notizia, dedicando ben 4 articoli della sua edizione del sabato (tiratura di 80.000 copie) di presentazione della citta' di Mantova, della sua economia e delle sue attrazioni turistiche. A detta dei principali protagonisti di questa operazione, Frank Alfano, Nino Amato e Tony Bruno, due sono gli aspetti originali di questo gemellaggio: la costituzione di un "business to business group", costituito gia' nel mese di settembre con la visita a Mantova dell'esperto in "business development" Nino Amato, e l'enfasi posta sui rapporti culturali e negli scambi educativi. L'Universita' del Wisconsin a Madison ospita infatti uno dei quattro centri di Italianistica piu' importanti negli Stati Uniti, mentre a Mantova si riuniscono i piu' importanti scrittori di tutto il mondo, ogni anno a settembre, per il Festival internazionale della Letteratura.

Sotto questi auspici ha preso avvio anche in Wisconsin il programma di insegnamento della lingua italiana nelle scuole pubbliche americane, finora limitato due soli istituti, uno a Madison e l'altro a Milwaukee.

Nel suo intervento, il console generale Granara ha ricordato la genesi del progetto di amicizia e di collaborazione tra queste due eleganti due citta', simili tra loro nella forma urbana circondata da laghi, nella qualita' della vita e nella ricerca di soluzioni per un'economia e uno sviluppo urbano compatibili con l'ambiente.

Prossimi appuntamenti: missione di operatori economici da Madison in aprile, interessati a varie possibilita' di investimento nella provincia di Mantova; a ottobre, missione di operatori economici mantovani del settore agro-zootecnico, interessati alla "World Dairy Expo" di Madison, edizione ottobre 2002.

MANTUA AND MADISON TO BE SISTERS

(News ITALIA PRESS) Mantua and Madison, Wisconsin now officially sister cities. In a ceremony organized by the promoters of the agreement, Madison Mayor Susan Bauman signed the “Sister City Agreement” together with the Italian Consul General Enrico Granara, as a delegate of Mantua Mayor Gianfranco Burchiellaro.

This agreement was conceived by three local associations: the Italian Workmen’s Club, the Italian-American Women’s Club, and the Greenbush Foundation, and by the following Italian-American organizations: WisItalia and NIAF. The event received considerable attention from the local press, as well as from the CBS television station and the “Capital Times”, dedicating a least four articles of its Saturday to present the city of Mantua, its economy, and its tourist attractions. According to the main protagonists of this operation, Frank Alfano, Nino Amato, and Tony Bruno, there are two original aspects to this sisterhood. The first is the constitution of a “business to business group”, which was already completed in September with business development expert Nino Amato’s visit to Mantua. The second is the emphasis placed on cultural relations and educational exchanges. The University of Wisconsin in Madison in fact hosts one of the most important Italian Study Centers in the United States, while many of the most important writers in the world meet every September in Mantua for the International Literature. Under this program the Wisconsin state program to teach the Italian language in American public schools was also initiated. Up to now, only two institutes are involved, one in Madison and the other in Milwaukee.

Consul General Granara, during his presentation, recalled the genesis of this project of friendship and collaboration between these two elegant cities, similar in appearance due to the surrounding lakes, in the quality of life, and in the search for environmentally compatible solutions for the economy and urban development.

Upcoming appointments: an economic mission from Madison in April for operators interested in various investment opportunities in the province of Mantua; in October, a mission of Mantuan economic operators in the agricultural-zootechnical sector interested in the October 2002 edition of the Madison “World Dairy Expo”.
