The Einstein "Myth". It WAS De Pretto
The ANNOTICO Report

As you will see by later references, Einstein not only "short changed" Italian Olinto DePretto, but apparently also Einstein "short changed" women, and his wife, Maric,
the REAL "brains" in the family.

First, the article in The Los Angeles Times announcing the airing of "Einstein's Wife",
tonight on PBS.

Then, articles arguing Olinto De Pretto's Precedence in establishing, E=mc2,
the basis of  "The Theory of Relativity".

TUNED IN
WAS EINSTEIN'S WIFE'S CONTRIBUTION ALL RELATIVE?

They used to say that behind every great man was a great woman. In Albert Einstein's case, the two may have been working side by side.

That's the premise of the intriguing, if inconclusive, documentary "Einstein's Wife"
(9 p.m., KCET). The film, written and produced by Geraldine Hilton, sheds new light on the famous scientist and his brilliant first wife, Mileva Maric, for years merely a historical footnote, while exploring their possible collaboration in a number of landmark discoveries — including the theory of relativity.

In 1986, more than 30 years after Einstein's death and 38 years after hers, a juicy stash of love letters from Einstein to Maric was unearthed in his archives, sparking a hot debate that continues in the science world: Was she his uncredited equal, or did she merely give the genius a measure of feedback?

Encouraged by her father, Maric zealously studied math and physics, later entering the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and meeting classmate Einstein. So began a romance fueled, as the narrator says, "by coffee, music and physics."

The passionate couple, known to each other as "Johnnie" and "Dollie," worked together on a string of early scientific projects and settled into an unconventional domestic bliss until the stress of his rising fame helped rip them apart, but the extent of their professional collaboration remains a mystery

Some scholars believe Einstein and Maric worked out E=MC2 as a team while they were visiting her family in Novi Sad, Hungary, and that her name was on the original documents detailing the formula before being lifted. "There are about a dozen statements in Albert Einstein's own hand stating that they were collaborating on 'our theory, our work' on relative motion," says one historian, Evan Harris Walker.

Others practically dismiss her as a "sounding board" for Einstein's ideas.

The film clearly leans toward the former view, although at this point the truth appears to be r-e-l-a-t-i-v-e.

OLINTO DE PRETTO AND E=MC2

In 1903, two years before Albert Einstein published his 1905 paper with the formula E=mc2, the formula was presented at a meeting of scientists in Italy by Olinto De Pretto, who discovered it.

Recent research has shown that it is quite probable that Einstein was aware of De Pretto's work, since Einstein was fluent in Italian and studied the writings of contemporary Italian scientists.

Largely because of this formula, Einstein is considered by some to be 'man of the century".  Quoted below is a translated excerpt from the Italian magazine Gente, issue of Dec. 2, 1999, p. 82:

"There can be no doubts, the proofs are incontestable", affirms professor Bartocci.  "Olinto De Pretto put into writing the most famous formula of our century in 1903, in a work entitled Ipotese sell'etere nella vita dell'universo, which was officially presented on November 29 of that year to the Royal Scientific Institute of Veneto.

The news did not pass unobserved, and aroused the interest of the great astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli.  The paper of Olinto De Pretto was included in a small volume on February 2 of the next year, 1904, with a preface by Schiaparelli, that was published by the Royal Institute..."

"The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources". Albert Einstein (quoted in Where Heavens Meet, by K.T. Frankovich).

L'AFFAIRE -EINSTEIN-DEPRETTO

Olinto De Pretto devised the equation E=mc^2, which he published formula twice, in the exact form in 1902 and 1903, two years earlier than Einstein.

Prof Bartocci authored a research on the affair Einstein-De Pretto in a book “Albert Einstein e Olinto De Pretto - La vera storia della formula piu’ famosa del mondo”.
