CAMARILLO, Calif. (AP) -- Orazio Fumagalli, an Italian sculptor known for his works of the human figure, has died. He was 83.

Fumagalli died of pancreatic cancer at his Camarillo home April 10, said Donna Granata, founder of Focus on the Masters, a nonprofit organization that promotes and records the lives and works of Ventura County artists.

Fumagalli was a third-generation artist who was born in Italy and raised in New York City. He received a bachelor's degree in art, a master's degree and a Ph.D. in communications, all from the University of Iowa.

He received a Fulbright Grant to study sculpture in Italy in 1950. His works were widely exhibited and received high praise in that country.

In 1964, he was invited to the University of Wisconsin, Stout, to create an art department, a program he eventually lifted to distinction, Granata said. During his 22 years at the university, Fumagalli assembled his own teaching staff while working on his own art.

He and his wife, Barbara, also an artist, moved to Ventura County in 1998. Fumagalli was featured as one of Focus on the Masters subjects of documentation in 2002, Granata said.

He is survived by his wife, son Elio, daughters Luisa and Piera, and five grandchildren.
