Obit: Nino Manfredi, 83, Gave Dignity and Glory to Italian Comedy.
The ANNOTICO Report

Nino Manfredi, one of the most popular Italian Film and TV stars passed away this morning, after a prolonged illness. He had suffered a stroke July of last year.

Thanks to Prof. Ben Lawton who stated: Although not as well known in the US as Marcello Mastroianni and Giancarlo Giannini, Nino Manfredi captured a certain type of Italianity as well an any actor. His contribution to Italian cinema is of the first order.

A former law student, Nino Manfredi made a name for himself in the world of Italian show business as a radio and music hall performer in the WWII years. After several years of voice-over work, he made his film debut in 1949, rapidly establishing himself as a prolific and reliable character actor. In 1962 he began directing, winning a Cannes Festival award for his first feature-length directorial assignment, Per Grazia Ricevuta, which he also scripted. Nino Manfredi has since written or co-written most of his films, most memorably 1977's Bread and Chocolate. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Nino Manfredi's Filmography includes 111 films as listed further below.

Condolences were expressed by President of the Republic, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi,
Cultural Heritage Minister Giuliano Urbani, Communications Minister, Maurizio Gasparri, and President of the Lower House, Pier Ferdinando Casini.

MANFREDI: CIAMPI, I DEEPLY MOURN HIS DEATH
(AGI) - Rome, Italy, June 4 - "The news of the death of Nino Manfredi gives me great sorrow”, began the President of the Republic, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi in his letter of condolences for the death of Manfredi sent to his widow, Erminia. Ciampi added: “Manfredi during his long career played many roles and enriched them with his personal style. Because of his artistic talent and his creativity, he was able to alternate between acting and directing and he represented with magnificent irony the development of Italian society. The treasure of his talent was its simplicity and he has a place in the history of Italian cinema and will continue to be a reference point for the new generations”. “My wife, Franca, and I are close to you, dear Mrs. Erminia and to your children and family with profound condolences for your grief”. (AGI) .

MANFREDI: WE LOST A UNIQUE FIGURE, SAYS URBANI
(AGI) - Rome, Italy, June 4 - "Nino Manfredi's demise, after those of Sordi, Gassman and Tognazzi, represents a great loss for our country. The loss of a unique figure". That's what cultural heritage minister Giuliano Urbani said, commemorating the actor. "Nobody ever gave him anyhting. He was born from the group of talents of the Orazio Costa academy. He worked his way hardly up the line, insisting bravely. He was the symbol of a hard-working Italy and its passion, competence and sacrifice.

MANFREDI: GASPARRI, "HE GAVE GLORY TO ITALIAN COMEDY"
(AGI) - Rome, Italy, 4 June - "With Nino Manfredi, the final representative of a generation of artists who made Italian cinema celebrated worldwide from the end of the war to now, has passed away", declared Communications Minister, Maurizio Gasparri. "Manfredi has ended an era whose history was represented by the extraordinary talent of unforgettable and unequalled actors. Nino Manfredi gave his face and voice to various types of performance: from radio, to television, via advertising; from the theatre to cinema. With his style he gave dignity and glory to Italian comedy." (AGI) .

MANFREDI: CASINI, A GREAT LOSS FOR ITALY
(AGI) - Madrid, Spain, June 4 - "We have lost one of the great Italian actors who we remember in many films. Some of them were ironic and some dramatic but they all moved our families and brought us pleasure. With the loss of Manfredi, we lose a part of Italy”, said the president of the Lower House, Pier Ferdinando Casini, who is in Madrid. He spoke as soon as he heard of Manfredi’s death. (AGI)

He was an actor, not a spotlight star, but a versatile actor, reflecting the habits and customs of our country. He worked in TV, cinema, theatre and radio. For years he was the emblem of our cinema, working with great film directors, such as Luigi Magni, Mario Monicelli, Ettore Scola, Nanni Loy and Luigi Comencini. Rome and Italy - he concluded - mourn your loss and bid you farewell, Saturnino, recalling your good-hearted wisdom, with which you spread our culture and art in the world". (AGI) -
