New Political Italy; Premier to be chosen by People, not Legislature?

The ANNOTICO Report

A constitutional reform passed by the Italian Senate yesterday, provides for a Premier chosen by citizens, for a predictable specified term, that creates more stability, protecting against a sudden reversal of Parliament majorities, but offers less "flexibility" :)

The Italian Premier's term will be less like England and Israel's Premier, and more like the American President.

The Conservatives are very much in favor of this Reform, the Left very opposed. This has something to do with who feel they have the short term future political advantage, and the lessor influence of the "loyal opposition".

REFORMS: NANIA, NEW ITALY BORN,  LET'S ENJOY THIS MOMENT

National Alliance senators whip, Domenico Nania, wrote in the leading article on Il Secolo d’Italia daily: ”Let’s enjoy this moment that confirms the authentic will of all the centre right coalition to change Italy and that is a turning point to close a ten-year period of long and extenuating transition”.

Nania is one of the main supporters of the constitutional reform passed by the Senate yesterday. Nania explained that today the new Italy can born. A new Italy based on a premier chosen and judged by citizens and on a serious legislation against sudden reversal of Parliament majorities.

This reform exalted the cornerstone principle of the Constitution, the people’s sovereignty and an equilibrated federalism that gives the right powers to regions without preventing state’s powers from safeguarding national unity.

Nania said that the left was only crying slogans, pleasantries and many lies. The left had a catastrophic attitude that was not fit to understand a reform that departed from old norms of politics, gave a real power and more rights to citizens and fixed the basis for the modernisation of institutions to govern the rapid process of change of the society. Nania concluded saying that the vote on reforms demonstrated the ability of the House of Liberties in making reforms, and the conservative attitude of the centre left that boycotted every change.
