Early next year, U.S. restrictions on importing artifacts
stolen from
Italian museums and archaeological sites will Expire.
In effect since 2001, the bilateral agreement that imposed
these
restrictions has helped catch criminals and has shown
America's commitment
to protecting an important part of our world heritage.
This gesture of goodwill has also led Italy to allow long-term
loans of
important artifacts and works of art to American museums
and institutions,
so that the American public can learn more about Italy's
rich and storied
past.
On September 8, the Cultural Property Advisory Committee
(CPAC) will hold
hearings to decide whether to honor Italy's request to
renew the agreement.
SAFE's (Saving Antiquities For Everyone) online appeal
in support of
renewal will be presented at the hearings, as evidence
that people in
America, and around the world, care about protecting
this important part of
our global heritage.
Make your voice heard. Appeal to CPAC by saying YES to
the extension by
going to the SAFE Website and merely
digitally signing the following statement today and pass
it along to your
friends, relatives, and coworkers.
"I support Italy's request for continued import restrictions
on certain
categories of antiquities into the U.S."
OR send an Email to SAFE at safeitaly@savingantiquities.org.
On September 8, at 1-3:30 pm, CPAC will hold an open session
to receive
oral public comment to consider Italy's request. More
information about the
public session is on the WebSite.
Persons wishing to attend this open session should email
the Cultural
Heritage Center of the Department of State or call (202)
619-6612 to
arrange for admission, as seating is limited.
