CERNOBBIO, Italy,
Mar. 18, 2006
(AP) Are Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie getting married here
Saturday? The locals don't know _ and they don't care.
"Who wants him? He's an actor, not God," said Marco Berna, 26, while
sipping a glass of wine at a mostly empty bar Friday night.
Rumors of a wedding have sent journalists scrambling all over this quiet
northern Italian town on the shores of Lake Como, a favorite getaway for the rich
and famous.
Cernobbio Mayor Simona Saladini said a wedding agency contacted her late last
year, scouting locations for a famous actor to be married Saturday. The agency
said the actor had filmed a movie at the town's famous Villa Erba, the former
home of the late Italian aristocrat and movie director Luchino Visconti.
"We concluded that the movie was 'Ocean's 12,' and they told me it was Mr.
Brad Pitt," Saladini said Friday in an interview with AP Television News.
By Saturday morning, however, there was no word from the Holl! ywood glamour
couple, said town spokesman Giuseppe Salvioni. Saladini said she could marry
them with two hours' notice if they arrived with all the necessary paperwork.
Another possible wedding location was Cernobbio's luxury resort Villa D'Este,
which often hosts stars and international conventions. But all was quiet there
Friday, and officials insisted they knew nothing of a wedding.
George Clooney's Villa Oleandra in the nearby town of Laglio was yet another possibility.
Clooney is a friend of the Hollywood
couple.
"There nothing going on here, just a few journalists in the square,"
said Monica Mantero, wife of Laglio Mayor Giuseppe Mantero.
Speculation about a wedding by the lake rippled last year, but quickly fizzled
after Clooney denied his friends were scheduled to marry at his villa.
Clooney's representative, Stan Rosenfield, declined to comment on the latest
gossip. "There's been wedding rumors for years," he told the AP on Thursday.!
"Rumors are rumors."
Pitt's representative, Cindy Guagenti, also declined to comment.
Jolie and Pitt, who costarred in "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," are expecting
a child this summer.
Cernobbio has long been a weekend retreat for Milan's wealthy, and for many years was the home of slain
fashion designed Gianni Versace, whose VIP guests included Madonna. Versace's
sister, Donatella, still visits often with a posse of rich and famous, said
local restaurant owner Holmes Sitta.
"Naomi Campbell, you can see her shopping at the market," he said.
"Even Matt Dillon came to drink a cappuccino."
But the locals, he explained patiently, aren't interested in the stars.
"We really don't care," he said.
