It seems like I'm due for a "real" fashion makeover. :)

I was under the impression, that good natural fibers, well tailored, with an understated look, with subtlety being the cornerstone of elegance.

NEW YORK -- The Italians play the fashion game by their own rules, eight of which are explained in detail in the debut issue of Bene magazine.

Bene celebrates Italy -- from a U.S. perspective. (The magazine's offices are in New York, although there is a team based in Italy.)

In the feature "The Elements of (Italian) Style," readers learn what's considered chic by local standards:

1 • Wear what you love. Forget trends -- invest in well-cut expertly tailored pieces that make you feel gorgeous every time you wear them.

2• Don't be afraid of color. Wearing a deep yellow, blue, green or pink dress shows confidence, especially when paired with shoes in a second bold hue.

3• Men can and should wear white. A white tux in a classic, masculine cut never goes out of style.

4• Mixing prints means depth, not disaster. Prints can look bold, yet balanced, when they share the same color palette.

5• Do one thing beautifully. Italians find a look that works and make it timeless.

6• Choose natural adornments. A flower, a leather belt and a linen handkerchief turn a pinstripe suit into a statement.

7• When it comes to jewelry, more is more. Simple necklaces, bracelets and rings become dynamic when stacked together.

8• Socks matter. Great style is in the details, so a fashion-conscious Italian won't rest until he or she has found the perfect socks, watch, scarf and belt.
