Subject:  Advanced Placement Exam in Italian

AN URGENT APPEAL FROM NIAF:

10/19/01

Please alert all your e-mail subscribers of the following:

If their local high school offers Italian, have them call the principal and
tell him/her that within the next two weeks they will receive a survey from
the College Board about establishing an Advanced Placement (AP) course and
exam in Italian at their school.

PLEASE URGE THE PRINCIPAL TO FILL OUT
THE SURVEY AND RETURN IT IMMEDIATELY.

If the survey does not arrive by October 31, please have the principal
contact Lee Jones at the College Board in NYC at 212/713-8066.

The College Board will vote in mid-December on whether or not to establish
such a program in Italian.  It wants 650 survey responses from Principals
showing interest in such a program.

AP courses and exams promote the study of a foreign language in high school
and in college.  There are such exams in French, Spanish and German but not
Italian.

The NIAF and the Sons of Italy have been working on this issue with the
American Association of Teachers of Italian and the Italian government.
Your help at this point is urgently needed and invaluable.

mille grazie....e sempre avanti!
