TOURISM: MANY ITALIANS WILL STAY IN ITALY

Special service by AGI on behalf of the Italian Prime Minister's office

(AGI) - Rome, May 30 2006

The Italians love Italy more and more, especially when it comes to holidays. An increasing percentage of Italians are choosing to stay in Italy over the summer, according to an Istituto Dinamiche survey (carried out on a sample of 3000 people) of Federalberghi-Confturismo, which also reveals that the tourism sector is gradually recovering.....

Over 18 mln Italians, compared with 17 mln in 2005, will choose national resorts for the long weekend of 2 June, while 4.5 mln will go abroad (5.2 mln).

More Italians will go on holiday in the summer: 24 mln (23.7 mln in 2005), that's 50.3 pct of the adult population. Currently, the undecided are 5.5 pct (2.5 mln). Almost 21 mln people will surely not go on holiday over the summer (44.2 pct).

Among the ones who will leave, 76 pct will stay in Italy (72 pct in 2005); 19 pct will go abroad (22 pct in 2005), always keeping an eye on good bargains. June is becoming more popular (7.2 pct this year, 6.8 pct in 2005); 27.5 pct will choose July (26.9 pct); 51.1 pct August and 7.2 pct September (9.5 pct).

Regarding foreign tourists coming to Italy, Americans and Japanese are on the rise, mainly visiting art cities. Germans are expected to be back too, while French and Britsh hold on to usual levels. Tourists from eastern Europe are increasing too.

These figures, said Bocca, confirm that our tourism sector "is competitive", and offer Culture and Tourism Minister Francesco Rutelli a good opportunity to draw up the economic measures the sector needs: few but crucial ones, starting from the appointment of new top managers at ENIT, then setting the adequate sums to be allocated for promoting Italy's image in the world, and special tax allowances for the sector.

Last but not least - said Bocca - initiatives for employment, to guarantee flexible systems, which companies operating in this sector need so much.
