Franco Danieli: Connection to Italians Overseas: Replaces Mirko Tremaglia, But Demoted to a Deputy Minister

The ANNOTICO Report

Minister to Italians Overseas, Mirko Tremaglia, with the change of Administration has been replaced by Franco Danieli, who has  very credible credentials and background in dealing with Italians Abroad.

Danielli, however takes over a position that formerly was of Minister level, but has been demoted to a DEPUTY Minister UNDER the Foreign Minister.

Danielli, says that's OK. (But then, What else could he be expected to say????)

Some say it was a trade off for greater and more stable funding.

The Margherita senator says his AGENDA and PRIORITIES are  Solidarity cheques, the Reorganisation and Expansion of the Consular network, and the Recovery of the Resources which previously were taken away from social expenditure and educational institutions.

Also, when Danielli was the Margherita party's senator in charge of Italians abroad, Danieli had pointed out some inefficiencies in the organisational structure of policies in constituencies abroad. Now as vice minister, he will have to find solutions for them. "It is necessary to review some mechanisms, and it will probably be necessary to make some legislative changes in order to correct them," he explained.

I'm not impressed !!!!       I need to hear him say again and again, like a Mantra:

We must do that which strengthens the Bond between Italians ABROAD and Italy, BUT Also, strengthen the Bond of those abroad of Italian ANCESTRY and Italy!!!!

Never take your eye off the GOAL, and  NEVER get bogged down in trivia and rearranging deck chairs

ITALIANS IN THE WORLD: DANIELI HAPPY NOT TO BE MINISTER

Special service by AGI on behalf of the Italian Prime Minister's office

(AGI) - Rome, June , 2006

As was expected the delegation for relations with Italians in the world went to Franco Danieli. The Margherita senator, now 50, inherits the responsibilities of Mirko Tremaglia, who put forth the law allowing overseas Italians to continue participating in Italian politics by giving them the right to vote, but unlike his predecessor, he does not have his own ministry.

Is he bothered? "Not at all, absolutely not," the Vice Minister reassured AGI. "It is the only time that those elected abroad and the Union coalition's coordinative body said: 'Thank you, we don't want any ministers.' It doesn't happen every day," Danieli said. "It's really about having tools which allow us to give answers."

Therefore, it is better to be "a vice foreign minister with heavy responsibilities, who can give answers, who has working tools, than a minister without portfolio with a low work output."

Concerning the work plan, the Marherita senator has a list of priorities to immediately start "working in a concrete way on a whole series of matters on the day's agenda."

Particularly, Danieli reminded that "solidarity cheques, the reorganisation and expansion of the consular network, the recovery of the resources which were, in these years, taken away from social expenditure and educational institutions."

The vice minister is now facing a new electoral deadline: the "devolution" referendum. "June 8 is the final deadline for the sending of ballot papers to voters," he pointed out, which is a task for the consulates. When he was the Margherita party's senator in charge of Italians abroad, Danieli had pointed out some inefficiencies in the organisational structure of policies in constituencies abroad. As vice minister, he will have to find solutions for them. "It is necessary to review some mechanisms, and it will probably be necessary to make some legislative changes in order to correct them," he explained.

Danieli, recently turned 50, married, is from Galatone, in the province of Lecce, but now lives in Bologna. He is a lawyer, specialised in labour and international law. He began his political activity in the student left-wing, then he joined the 'Rete' of which he became the national spokesman in 1995. After two legislative seats in the Lower House, this is his third experience in the Senate.

The new vice minister was under-secretary to the Foreign Minister in D'Alema and Amato's governments, in charge of relations with the Americas and for Italians abroad. He was chairman of the General Council for Italians Abroad and organised the first conference for Italians in the world. The senator speaks three foreign languages: English, French and Spanish.
