Ancient Italy's richest citizens vacationed in beautiful villas overlooking the Bay of Naples.

The art that graced their luxurious homes was preserved for centuries by volcanic ash.

"In Stabiano: Exploring the Ancient Seaside Villas of the Roman Elite," will be exhibited for three months beginning Nov. 3 at the Toledo Museum of Art.

It features 70 frescoes, statues, and household items from Stabiae, a resort area buried in ash and pumice when Mount Vesuvius erupted in the year 79. This traveling exhibit, organized in Italy, has been seen in cities across the country since its United States debut at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History in April, 2004. Tickets must be purchased for this show, which will continue through Jan. 28 in the Canaday Gallery.

Priming the pump will be "The Lure of Pompeii," opening Oct. 20 through Jan. 14. It will explore the intrigue this ancient city has had since its excavation in the 1750s.
