Nanocrystals
hold out hope for better medical tests
(ANSA) -
October 27, 2006
Italian researchers have shown that tiny particles
called nanocrystals can be flooded with more light
than thought possible, paving the way for a raft of clinical and commercial uses .
"The nanocrystals, when subjected to extreme fluorescence, will
enable doctors to carry out tests with an extremely high level of precision and
sophistication," Pier Paolo Pompa and Luigi Martiradonna of the National Nanotechnology Laboratory in
Lecce said in an article to be published in the prestigious US journal Nature .
"Analyses
may even be carried out at the level of a single molecule, with obvious
advantages for gene tests," the authors said .
Commercial
applications of the breakthrough included increasing the efficiency and
cost-effectiveness of liquid-crystal displays (LCDs),
microlasers, a range of telecommunications devices
and low-consumption lamp bulbs, the researchers said .
