Arab North Africans Immigrate "Moderno"- Brave Sicilian Strait

The ANNOTICO Report

I don't know if I'm laughing harder at the attempt by a Moroccan and Tunisian to IMMIGRATE to Italy by crossing the Strait of Sicily on JET SKIS, (it gives new meaning to "huddled masses"), they wore "WET SUITS" (clever), or the fact that they ran out of FUEL (what a basic miscalculation), or that they used a CELL PHONE to call Rescuers (clever) , BUT they called Italians rather than Tunisians.

Actually their ambitions were somewhat lessor, since they were only trying to reach Pantelleria, (or Pantalaria), the ancient Cossyra, an  Italian island in the Strait of Sicily, 100 km (62 mi) southwest of the south-western extremity of Sicily, (a commune belonging to the Sicilian province of Trapani) and 70 km (43 mi) east of the Tunisia. Therefore, they accomplished 31miles of their 42 mile journey.

And perhaps we should not be overly harsh on their miscalculation of fuel, since the currents in the Sicily Strait are enormously unpredictable, since the Deep currents in the strait flow from east to west, and the current nearer the Surface travels in the opposite direction, with local, regional, and even lunar forces further complicating predications, and perplexing oceanographers.

Notice, that both Pantelleria and the Pelagie Islands (Lampedusa, Linosa, and Lampione) between Malta and Tunisia,  south of Sicily, are closer to Tunisia than to Sicily.

The Strait of Sicily is the strait  between Sicily and Tunisia. It is about 100 miles (160 km) wide and divides the Tyrrhenian Sea  and the western Mediterranean Sea from the eastern Mediterranean.

A strait is a narrow channel of water  that connects two larger bodies of water, and thus lies between two land masses. Straits can lie on important shipping routes and wars  have been fought for control of these straits.

Sicily was THE Strategic place in the civilized world, until the discovery of the Americas by Columbus, and therefore EVERYONE came to Conquer. The innumerable Invaders gave Sicily it's RICH Cultural Heritage, but also its abundance of Cynicism, resulting from the continuum of  exploitation.

Other well-known straits include Dover, Gibraltar, Bosporus/Dardanelles, Magellan, Bering, Malaccca               Can you name the bodies of water they connect, or even where they are???? :) :)

Immigrants Saved After Trying to Reach Italy

Rome - Two wetsuit-clad north African immigrants were rescued Thursday after trying to cross the Strait of Sicily on a jetski, Italian harbour authorities have said.

The two men, a Tunisian and a Moroccan, had left the Tunisian port of Kelibia on Wednesday night bound for the southern Italian island of Pantelleria, about 70km away.

The men were about 20km off the coast of Pantelleria when the jetski ran out of gas and started to drift. They then used their cellphone to call Italian authorities for help.

A coast guard speedboat was dispatched from the port of Pantelleria to recover the two would-be immigrants, who were found in good health. The men were then taken to a detention center in Tampani, Sicily.
