Rome - Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi plans to establish a university as a 'lasting' gift to Italy, the Corriere della Sera daily reported Wednesday.

Berlusconi was quoted as saying the university was 'a present that I want to give to Italy ... something that will last over time'.

The university was intended to be an elite college, which could include former international statesmen such as ex-US Presidents George Bush sen. and Bill Clinton as well as former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev amongst its teachers.

Berlusconi, who now heads the Italian opposition, said he wanted to contribute to the establishment of a new political class in Italy.

The university could be named 'University of Liberal Thought', followed by Berlusconi's name, the report said.

The former Italian president, who is still on trial for tax fraud, embezzlement and false accounting in connection with the purchase of US film rights by his company Mediaset, had returned to Italy short before Christmas after receiving heart surgery in the US.

The 70-year-old was fitted with a pacemaker at a clinic in Ohio after collapsing while addressing supporters at a meeting with supporters in Tuscany in late November.

Berlusconi was now considering to convalesce on a beauty farm, the report said.
