Sophia Loren Slams Quentin Tarantino Remarks About Italian Cinema

The ANNOTICO Report

Quentin Tarantino who has specialized in writing screen violence, and is enamored of spaghetti westerns, and was inspired  by Italian B-movie directors,  ventured out of his genre ,and made some ill advised, and questionable  remarks about Italian films.

He seemed to demean films based more on the human predicament, that intend to grasp the heart, and deal with the full spectrum of emotions, rather than just fear.

Coincidentally, Michael Crialese's "Golden Door" that was winner of the Silver Lion at the Venice International Film Festival, is now showing in the US.(in Italian with English sub titles)  "Golden Door" is the subject of a following Report

LOREN HITS BACK AT TARANTINO

(ANSA) - Sydney, June 1 - Sofia Loren angrily hit back Friday at Quentin Tarantino's claim that Italian cinema is dead.

"How dare he talk about Italian cinema when he doesn't  even know anything about American cinema," the 73-year-old
diva said as she opened the Italo-Australian Film festival.

Loren praised the "many great things" about today's Italian cinema, including the new generation of actors and actresses.

Speaking in Cannes last week, Tarantino said he was "appalled" at the current state of an Italian cinema he acknowledges as one of his main sources of inspiration - particularly in B-movie directors like Mario Bava.

"I really loved the Italian movies of the 1960s and 1970s. What happened? It's a real tragedy," the Pulp Fiction director said. "The (Italian) films I've seen over the last few years  all seem the same. All they talk about is boys growing up, girls growing up, couples in crisis, holidays for the  mentally disabled".

Tarantino, who was at Cannes to present his new film Death Proof, will be a guest at this year's Venice Film Festival in September, where he will present his favourite spaghetti westerns.

Tarantino's writing credits include; Inglorious Bastards (2008) Death Proof (2007) Grindhouse (2007) Reservoir Dogs (2006) "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" (2 episodes, 2005)  Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004)Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)  Jackie Brown (1997)Curdled (1996) From Dusk Till Dawn Dance Me to the End of Love (1995) Natural Born Killers (1994) Pulp Fiction (1994)
