Rave Reviews about "Golden Door" (Nuovo mondo) - In Italian with subtitles and in English.

The ANNOTICO Report

"The Golden Door" is about the poignant and intimate odyssey of a simple Sicilian farmer widower, Salvatore Mancuso, who makes the bold decision to take his grown sons, Angelo (the handsome one) and Pietro (the deaf-mute one), and his aged mother to the New World, not just the land of opportunity - more like some enchanted Oz, beckoning, glowing gold. However, what to do if his deaf-mute son is rejected by one of the grim-faced bureaucrats that have an extensive list of reasons to bar entry.

One of the Non-Italian passengers on board, notably, and conspicuously, there is Lucy (Charlotte Gainsbourg), an Englishwoman with fancy clothes and a noble air, but a sad air, too. Lucy is alone, mysterious. She knows that she is unlikely to gain entry into the United States without a husband, or at least a fiance.

Lucy locks eyes with Salvatore early in the voyage. Their paths cross, their fates entwine. Hmmmmm

Seattle Post Intelligencier - Sean Axmaker - A

"Painted onscreen in a hypnotic mix of hypercharged naturalism and magic realism, "Golden Door" is not about the destination but the journey,"         http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/movies/320762_golden22q.html

Boston Globe- Wesley Morris  - 4/4

" A movie about immigration that even Lou Dobbs can get behind. It's so hypnotically breathtaking, you don't realize you're not breathing.

By the final shot, you don't realize you're crying either, but there go the tears."

The New York Times - AO Scott  -   4/5.5

"What makes Mr. Crialeses telling unusual, apart from the gorgeousness of his wide-screen compositions, is that his emphasis is on departure and transition, rather than arrival.

Miami Herald - Peter  Debruge - 3.5/4

"Director Emanuele Crialese (Respiro) passes no judgments, capturing the mundane and miraculous alike.

The Philadelphia Inquirer - Steven Rea - 3.5/4

There's an old Zen saying, "It's the journey, not the destination." The Golden Door  offers an extraordinary journey of its own.
