New RAI International Deal Takes Italian Abroad More Seriously

The ANNOTICO Report

RAI International intends to boost information watched in Italy and in Europe, to be directed abroad via satellite, and the network will be organized with two basic channels, one for news and the other carrying Italian programs; and "when possible, a sports channel will be added."

The Italian news agency ANSA.will be one of the tiles in the mosaic of media that will strengthen Italian content broadcast abroad, as part of a "a big, systematic step forward" for the Italian media system.

I consider essential," said Italys Prime Minister Romano Prodi, "this new course for RAI International. It is in the best interest of Italian communities abroad, but it is also essential for presenting Italy to foreigners as a serious country with complex issues."

For these reasons, Prodi expressed his great favour for the new convention just signed, and offered his wishes "to those who will bear this responsibility, that they may work strongly and efficaciously presenting our country not with stereotypes or propaganda but in its deep reality."  This is a task, said Prodi to RAI International director Piero Badaloni, "among the best that one can receive in the world of media."

Equally satisfied was undersecretary Levi, who remarked, "Today, a new RAI International is born, one equal to our countrys ambition to present itself on the world stage and to the expectations of Italians living abroad."

Levi explained that the new convention will allow RAI International to be watched in Italy and in Europe via satellite, and that in due course the network will be organized with two basic channels, one for news and the other carrying Italian programs; and "when possible, a sports channel will be added."

Prodi also praised the Italian news agency ANSA. "ANSA," said Prodi, "is one of the tiles in the mosaic of media that will strengthen Italian content broadcast abroad. I intend to boost information directed abroad, making use of ANSA and other tools." Prodi called the signature of the new convention "a big, systematic step forward" for the Italian media system.
