Venetians Teach Tourists Economics - Rudeness has a Price

It pays to be polite if youre visiting Venice this year. Bar owners and restaurateurs in the city stand accused of operating a three-tier pricing system - one price for Italians, a higher price for visitors who make a bit of an effort, but a much higher price for visitors who are offhand and rude.

If you are Italian, a croissant and a cappuccino cost 3.50. If you speak another language, it costs 7," admits Franco Conte, of Codacons, the Italian consumer rights group. However, there is one type of visitor who always gets a good deal. A gondolier said he gave "special discounts" for "pretty ladies".
