"Homie Spumoni" - DVD- Born Black +  Raised Italian = Totally Confused

The ANNOTICO Report

I am Not Recommending, Just Informing

The Pro is a Cast including  Whoopi Goldberg, Donald Adeosun Faison, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Joey Fatone. Rather Strong
The Con is that the Film seemed to go straight to DVD, and bypassed the theatre exhibition.

I'm curious whether the Film  will be sympathetic toward Blacks and otherwise toward Italians, or even handed.

Rated: R
Cast: Whoopi Goldberg, Donald Adeosun Faison, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Joey Fatone
Director: Mike Cerrone

Synopsis: Meet Renato: a pasta-loving, Dean Martin-worshipping Italian-American living la dolce vita and working at his papa's Little Italy deli...until his African-American birth parents show up, claiming he's their long-lost son Leroy. Now that he's suddenly black, "Leroy" tries his best to shoot hoops and dig hip hop, but all he really wants is for everyone to just get along!

Critique:

Homie Spumoni  is not without its humor, but it isn't all laughs and giggles. This film takes a light-hearted peek into societal, cultural and racial differences and prejudices. Renato grows up believing he is Italian and not black, and for some reason, once he learns the truth, everything changes.

He leaves the only family he has ever known and goes to stay with his biological family. The transition from his lived heritage to his inherited roots is not smooth. He learns what it means to be "black", something he did not know before his life-changing discovery.

While Renato goes through this journey of discovery and reality, the audience is introduced to many racial stereotypes encased in humor.

There is nothing particularly monumental about this film, however, it does suggest positive ideas.

The acting is good, the story flows well, it is entertaining and it teaches good lessons about living together in harmony - no matter what your race, color or religion - and that, to me, is the best thing a film can do—show the ability, we as human beings have, to love - unconditionally.
