In late fall 2009, a blind taste test judged by SeriousEats.com in New York occurred to determine who made the best bagels. It came down between Jewish and Italian bagels.

Phil Romanzi, an Italian American owner of the Bagel Hole in Park Slope, Brooklyn took the coveted price of making the ‘best bagels.’ “It’s nice to be recognized after working so hard all these years,” shared Phil Romanzi.

Despite the controversy of selecting a non-Jewish bagel maker, SeriousEats.com's founder Ed Levine (Jewish) made a non-biased decision. “A proper bagel shouldn't be too big," Levine said. "A lot of today's bagels suffer from what I call bagel elephantitis. They shouldn't be sweet, either. A bagel shouldn't be a dessert.”  When asked about Phil Romanzi’s bagels, Levine said, “I liked that it had a crust that required teeth. But the innards of the bagel weren't heavy. It just tasted like a good, old-fashioned bagel."

If it’s any concellation, the bagel winner’s wife is Jewish.

When in Brooklyn, visit The Bagel Hole at 400 7th Avenue in Park Slope and say hello Phil Romanzi.
