Because of the degree of confusion regarding
programming dates of the
"Visions of Italy" Series, the following was provided directly and
personally
from Susan Soberman, Senior Publicist at WLIW New York.
WLIW is Producer of the Series.
------------------------------------
Richard,
... I hope I can clarify the programming situation for you...
VISIONS OF ITALY: Northern Style, VISIONS OF ITALY: Southern Style,
and
VISIONS OF SICILY are companion programs and part of a TriParte Series.
VISIONS OF SICILY - is premiering on Monday, March 4 at 8 PM on WLIW21
in the
New York metropolitan area, and in Albany/Schenectady on Monday, March
4 at 9
PM on WMHT/17 (a "test" station to see if it will be picked up nationally
by
PBS). The program will also air in encore presentations on WLIW
throughout
March (see wliw.org) and likely encore on WMHT as well. The program
may be
distributed to PBS stations in August, but that is not determined yet.
The
success of the two New York airdates will be a factor in that decision.
VISIONS OF ITALY: Southern Style - was released to PBS stations nationwide
in
December 2001 and will be airing again in many cities in March 2002
because it
was so popular in December.
VISIONS OF ITALY: Northern Style - was released to PBS stations nationwide
for
March 2002 (aired on WLIW21 New York and some select cities originally
in 1998
and most recently in February 2002 on WLIW).
The confusion comes because these programs air during PBS stations'
membership
campaigns, commonly known as "pledge drives," and unlike the regular
schedule
when many shows have "common carriage" (same airdate and time) during
pledge
drives, each station independently determines 1) whether to air
a show and
2) what date and time they want to air it...
I suggest that if your members would like to know the program schedule
in
your area that your members Goto PBS
Online
<<http://www.pbs.org>> then Goto "Station Finder" on the
right side of the
Top Bar,
OR, Go to the web site
PBS - Station Finder
Then, put in your Zip/town and that should take you to your PBS station.
OR, if you know your local PBS station's website, you can go directly
there.
If it turns out your local station is not airing the program and the
still
want the VHS, they can get it directly from WLIW at www.wliw.org, but
it is
not yet available for
retail - it is a membership incentive. One VHS is $90, two are
$150, and
three
are $225 (either multiples of the same show or one of each) - the money
raised
supports more Italian programming on public television, and viewer
support of
these shows is like a 'vote' for more of the same (of course, now we're
flown
over all of Italy, but we could do other cultural programs!).
Your subscribers should email Kristen at << Kristen_Lippincott@wliw.pbs.org>>
if they run into a "brick wall".
Thank you again for your ongoing support of WLIW's productions.
Sincerely,
Susan Soberman

RAA NOTE:
VISIONS OF ITALY: NORTHERN STYLE
Using a helicopter-mounted camera, VISIONS OF ITALY: NORTHERN STYLE
offers
the ultimate vacation postcard of destination Italy — the sights and
scenes
immortalized in literature, movies and art for centuries — seen as
never
before. The program uses stunning aerial footage and evocative Italian
music,
from Luciano Pavarotti to Dean Martin, to showcase unprecedented views
of
Siena, Florence, Pisa, Venice, Lake Como, the Alps and more.Spectacular
views
from the lush
countryside and historic landmarks to the bustling cities.
The flight begins where much of the world's cultural arts began — in
Florence, where the magnificent Duomo and the Giotto Bell Tower forever
recall the power and majesty of ancient city-states. The program continues
over the Tuscan countryside, around the famed tower of Pisa, along
the chic
Italian Riviera beaches of Portofino and Camogli to the Pinot Grigio
vineyards of Veneto to the Venetian canals, Christopher Columbus' Genoa,
Romeo and Juliet's Verona, the ski resorts of the Italian Alps and
the
leisurely grandeur of Lake Como.
---------------------------------------------
VISIONS OF ITALY: SOUTHERN STYLE
Shot in high-definition video from a helicopter-mounted camera, this
program
takes viewers on a breathtaking aerial adventure starting just south
of
Rome, following the rugged western coastline to the toe of the "boot"
at
Reggio Calabria, and traveling over the countryside back to Rome. Stunning
aerial footage captures the beauty of Naples, the majesty of Vesuvius,
the
ruins of Pompeii, and other popular Italian sites.
