Veteran Italian Screenwriter Cecchi D'Amico dies

ROME -- Italian screenwriter Suso Cecchi D'Amico, who contributed to such classics as the neo-realistic masterpiece "Bicycle Thieves," "The Leopard" and "Big Deal on Madonna Street," has died at 96.

Messages of condolences started pouring in Saturday after her death was reported by the ANSA news agency, which cited her family.

President Giorgio Napolitano said she was a "great protagonist of one of the best seasons of Italian cinema."

Cecchi D'Amico was nominated for an Oscar for a movie by Mario Monicelli called "Casanova 70."

ANSA said she is survived by three children. A funeral is scheduled for Monday.
