The Italian government claims there are 25 million Brazilians of Italian descent, (other estimates are 15 to 18 million) which would be the largest population of Italian background outside of Italy itself. Brazilians of Italian descent are probably the 4th most populous group of Brazilians by descent, just behind the descendants of Portuguese settlers, descendants of African slaves, and Amerindians. 
Few Italians realize that the Italian Diaspora in The USA and Canada is smaller and less Italian than the community in South America. In addition to Brazil, Italian Argentines are estimated to be 25 million (up to 60% of the total population).
