PANE AMARO (Bitter Bread)

The Italian version of this film was broadcast nationally in Italy by RAI-Italian Television and received wide critical acclaim. The Italian newspaper "La Stampa" called it: "An investigation into our past that is more compelling than a feature film."

PANE AMARO (Bitter Bread) has been called the first comprehensive depiction on film of the early Italian American experience. The result of over four years of research in the United States and in Italy, this feature-length documentary tracks the social, economic, and political transformation of Italians from immigrant victims of violence and prejudice to prominent members of American society. PANE AMARO brings to life pivotal events in the history of Italian Americans such as:

?           The lynching of 11 Italian immigrants in New Orleans in 1891--the largest in US history  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B911djBOwdM

?           The establishment and growth of Italian Harlem in New York City

?           The Settlement Houses and the process of Americanization

?           The 1911 New York Triangle Factory fire, in which dozens of Italian women workers died

?           The rise of the first Italian American leaders: Fiorello LaGuardia, Vito Marcantonio, Carlo Tresca,  Leonardo Covello and Generoso Pope Sr.

?           The  Declaration of 600,000 Italian American civilians as?Enemy Aliens? during World War II. resulting in Dislocations,  Internment, and  Restrictions more severe  than House Arrest.

These stories are told by weaving together personal accounts from members of the community and comments by noted American scholars, and through the use of a treasure trove of historical photographs and footage. The Italian version of this film was broadcast nationally in Italy by RAI-Italian Television and received wide critical acclaim. The Italian newspaper ?La Stampa? called it: ??an investigation into our past that is more compelling than a feature film.?
