"MICHELANGELO: THE SHADOW OF GENIUS" OPENS IN FLORENCE
THEN WILL TOUR U.S. CITIES

An enormous international exhibition opening today spotlights the role
Michelangelo Buonarroti played in Florence during the time of the Medici and
focus on the artist's profound influence on other artists of the 16th and
17th centuries in Italy and throughout Europe.

The exhibition, titled "The Shadow of Genius. Michelangelo and the Art of
Florence, 1537-1631", will be in Florence until September 29.

Afterwards it travels to the United States where it will be housed at the Art
Institute of Chicago from November 9 to February 2, 2003, and then at the
Institute of Art of Detroit from March 16 to June 8, 2003.

More than 150 works --painting, sculpture, design, tapestry, glass,
porcelain, stonework, furniture, armor and reliquary items-- on loan from
major Italian and foreign museums are on display in the nine sections of the
show.

The assembled works document for the first time the wide-ranging artistic
heritage of Michelangelo and his impact on the language of figurative art.
