During Independence Day celebrations at Villa Taverna yesterday, American
ambassador to Italy Mel Sembler said, "America has no finer ally than Italy.

I said the same thing at the celebration in Anzio, and I repeat it here
today."

Accompanied at the celebrations by Vice Premier Gianfranco Fini and Senate
President Marcello Pera, the ambassador continued his speech, declaring,
"When I say our finest ally, I am referring to the all the people of Italy

...a sign of Milan/Italy's aim to strengthen ties
                    with expressions of American culture."

An exhibit entitled "New York Renaissance", inaugurated in March at the
Palazzo Reale in Milan, has become the most highly visited show of
contemporary art in Italy.

As part of an homage to "The Big Apple", curators have organized a series of
summer events called "Summer Evenings at the Palazzo Reale", which will last
until August 17.

The series will include an ad-hoc film festival in the Palazzo's courtyard,
and a live concert series.

The thematic concert series will include musical genres associated with
famous New York clubs and range from the classic jazz of the Cotton Club to
the disco music of Studio 54, the bebop of Charlie Parker at Birdland, and
the avant garde sounds emanating from John Zorn at the Knitting Factory.

"It's no coincidence that this series is beginning on the 4th of July," said
Milan's Cultural Commissioner Salvatore Carruba, "in fact, it's a sign of our
city's aim to strengthen ties with expressions of American culture."
