In my October 10 Report, The Title was:
"Rudy (says): Italo-Americans, (should) be less sensitive about Sopranos!"

I included the following statements:

[[ What really bothers me most however is (Giuliani's) "Sellout".
You have a "Conflict of Interest". Brad Grey, the Producer of The Sopranos, acted as your agent in securing YOU a Multi Million $ Book deal.
Now, who do you support in a battle, between the BEHEMOTH, (AOL/ Time-Warner/
HBO/ Grey-Brillstien) MONEY MACHINE vs the Defamed Italian Community?
To your everlasting shame!!!!!!! You get bought out, and then try to make the Victims of your PATRON, appear to be unreasonable!
As Strother Martin said to Paul Newman in "Cool Hand Luke",
We've got to get your mind right"!!!!
Yes, You are in serious need of an "attitude adjustment" ]]

A suprising number of Italian Americans and NON Italian Americans responded,
either expressing their outrage that Giuliani would be so brazenly "outspoken"
in favor of "The Sopranos", that demeaned Italian Americans, when it was Produced by his munificent benefactor, or incredible disbelief, asking for verification.

The Conflict of Interest, (or "Sellout"), perhaps should not be shocking, in view of the fact that Brad Grey was accused of "double-crossing" by Garry Shandling, who was singlehandly responsible for Brad Grey's success (See below "100 Most Powerful")

Brad Grey readily admits to continuing "Conflicts of Interest".

Hollywood Hit Man
Brett Pulley,
Forbes Magazine

Brad Grey has muscled in on showbiz, parlaying talent agency work into hits like The Sopranos and studio-like power....

RUDOLPH GIULIANI
One of Grey's partners worked with Giuliani in the U.S. Attorney's office. Now Grey has Rudy linked to an HBO documentary, a book deal and the speaking circuit. Grey needs to make sure his client isn't seen as exploiting Sept. 11......

...(Grey's) blending of artist management and show production into one company is rife with conflicts. He has to negotiate on behalf of his stars and assure them he has only their interests in mind, yet at the same time make his program buyers feel their interests are paramount. Can anyone blame the envious denizens of Hollywood for suspecting that Grey's own agenda wins out?

"It is a conflict of interest," he candidly admits. "I don't shy away from it. I like to be crystal clear about it and acknowledge it." His policy is to inform all clients that he also is in the content business. Any performers who choose to join a Grey production are required to hire an outside attorney and agent to protect them in the crossfire. The Sopranos began as a project Grey was pitching in partnership with David Chase, the show's creator. Avoiding any conflict, Chase opted for outside management....

It is the kind of double-dealing that the Screen Actors Guild sought to prevent when it imposed rules 63 years ago blocking talent agents--as opposed to the newer breed of managers like Grey--from owning a stake in the movies and TV shows that employ their clients...

Five years ago Grey's business model came under attack when his longtime client and friend, comedian Garry Shandling, filed a $100 million lawsuit accusing Grey of using their relationship to execute other deals without fairly compensating Shandling. ... Name-calling ensued, and entertainment honchos on both coasts watched in salacious disbelief. "It was about as ugly a situation as you can get,"...The case was settled before it went to court, but not before it killed a friendship and blemished Grey's image...

Giuliani's Book Agent Is No Book Agent

Just one year ago Brillstein-Grey, the company that makes The Sopranos ...described themselves thusly in a press release: "Brillstein-Grey and its parent company, Basic Entertainment, have produced such TV properties as The Sopranos,...and Politically Incorrect and handle a multitude of talent including ..Nicolas (Coppola) Cage, and Sylvester Stallone. It is also working on upcoming theatrical releases...

No mention of handling any writers or books of any kind. So what's Brad Grey doing handling the sale of New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani's two books to Talk/Miramax?

And how did Grey, who gave about $25,000 in the last couple of years to the Democratic National Committee and Democratic candidates, suddenly become enamored of (Republican) Rudy's life story? Of course, if the $3 million advance is correct, B-G gets upwards of a $300,000 commission. But even that $3 million seems strange. At that rate, Talk would have to sell 120,000 copies of books priced at $25. Even former mayor Ed Koch didn't do that well, and he was considered sort of a humorous guy.

You know Rudy is not going to discuss his love life — he has underage children and an ongoing divorce that he's not going to tamper with. Do people in Michigan really care about the Fulton Fish Market?

Usually a writer meets with an agent who is enthusiastic about his book and his ideology. It's hard to imagine the conversation between Grey and Giuliani this time: "Yeah, we really don't like you, but now we're happy to promote your ideas." Hmmm

... And also, just asking, but wasn't it Mayor Giuliani who disinvited the cast of The Sopranos to a recent city event? "We've reduced the influence of the Mafia so much," Giuliani said last spring according to The New York Times, "now when they do mob shows, they don't even set them in New York any more. They put them in New Jersey."

Calls to Brillstein-Grey on Friday regarding their new endeavor as literary agents were not returned.

100 Most Powerful: Brad Grey
written by Kim Seaholm

Brad Grey is listed as one of the most powerful people in Hollywood....Brad Grey was born December 29, 1957 in the Bronx and grew up in Spring Valley, New York. He was a student at State University of New York in Buffalo and majored in Communications. While he was attending college he got his first break as an unpaid runner for Harvey Weinstein. Harvey Weinstein was a local concert promoter at that time.

While Grey was in his senior year in college he signed his first comedian Bob Saget, who is still a client. Mr. Saget then led Grey to another unknown comedian, Gary Shandling. Gary Shandling would become the young manager's most important client because of his stature with fellow comedians. After Grey had graduated college in 1979 he was hired by Weinstein. Later the two started a management company....

in 1980, a year later he separated from Weinstein and moved from Buffalo... In Los Angeles Grey put together his own management company, and had few clients. In 1983 Bernie Brillstein and Grey met at a convention in San Francisco. They instantly became friends. Brillstein recalls, "Brad said to me that if I taught him the production side of the business and introduced him to the people I know, he'd bring me in the young talent"....

The first major production deal that Grey handled was that with Sony-owned Columbia Pictures..... Next Grey had an opportunity with Capital Cities/ ABC in 1994.....Universal Studios wanted to be in business with Brillstein-Grey... But because Grey has not had a prime-time hit, ABC and Disney have lost confidence in him and want out of the partnership. This cost them $100 million.

In 1998 Garry Shandling sued Grey for $100 million. Shandling proclaimed that Grey did not protect his interests and that he used Shandling's talent to build Brillstein-Grey into a management power house... Because of this suit it dragged Grey who likes to keep a low-profile, into the media spotlight. This created bad publicity for Grey....
