I encourage each of you to contact any youthful relatives that might be interested in the OSIA Scholarships mentioned below. I think this is positive.

However, I would like to see Sons of Italy, NIAF, UNICO spend the same money on developing, or making available a Database that provides Scholarship INFORMATION to both, exclusively Italian Americans, and the General Population, for Every College and University and College in the USA and Italy.

In this way, thousands of Italian American youth can benefit, rather than just a few!

The  Adopt-A-School Italian Language Program, and Global Experiences for Work/Study Opportunities are also positive, but I sure would like to see from each of the Major Italian American Organizations to put much more emphasis on creating, and supporting ITALIAN AMERICAN STUDIES PROGRAMS.

To be able to speak Italian, but know little about one's Italian American and Italian  Culture, seems superficial. Are we "Italian" because we speak Italian, or we eat Italian, or we wear Italian Suits??? To me it's the knowledge of your Culture. Genealogy is a good first step. But that's just my opinion.

If you agree, the Email Addresses for the Major I-A Organizations are at the bottom. If you disagree, they would appreciate hearing that you appreciate their efforts

The Sons of Italy Foundation's 2003 National Leadership Grant Competition is

Ten to 14 scholarships are available. They include a new Italian language
scholarship, two study abroad scholarships, and a scholarship for the

Sons of Italy Launches Adopt-A-School Italian Language Program

The Sons of Italy, at the request of the government of Italy, is launching
its "Adopt-A-School" program, a national initiative to start and sustain
Italian language courses in American schools.

OSIA is urging its grassroots network of more than half a million members
and supporters coast to coast to assist by encouraging local school
officials to offer Italian courses; providing scholarships for Italian
language students; and purchasing Italian textbooks, tapes, videos and other
necessary materials. Those interested can utilize the free how-to kit "Start
Italian in Your School!" in their efforts.

Learning Italian is one of the best ways that our youngest Italian Americans
(and others!) can discover their heritage and appreciate the culture of the
nation's fifth-largest ethnic group.

Think about adopting a school in your community! Contact Michael Greto, OSIA
director of youth and Italian studies, at 202.547.2900 or mgreto@osia.org
for more information or to obtain a free kit.

OSIA Partners with Global Experiences for Work/Study Opportunities

The Order Sons of Italy in America (OSIA), in its broad efforts to promote
Italian language and culture, has joined forces with international education
company Global Experiences to give college students and young professionals
the opportunity to study or work in Italy.

Through Global Experiences, OSIA, the oldest and largest national
organization for men and women of Italian heritage in the United States, has
teamed up with the Centro Linguistico Italiano Dante Alighieri (CLIDA) in
Florence to provide a variety of Italian language and culture programs.
CLIDA is one of Italy's oldest private language schools specializing in
teaching foreigners.

The partnership program allows participants to "test-drive" an international
career and develop a global résumé with the bonus of learning Italian.
Through the program, students can:

*      earn credits for Italian language and culture studies
*    qualify for Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certification
*  participate in internships with Italian companies and organizations
*    develop a program that combines any of the above.
