There is a trial under way in New York getting a lot of coverage here. It involves the murder of a small time hood, who lived in a wheelchair. His name was Conigliaro. The gang he was with was mostly Black and Hispanic. They killed him. But that hasn't stopped the New York Times, Daily News, and New York Post from calling the trial 
a "Mob Trial." They keep mentioning the "Lucchese Crime Family." 

However, for those who read past the headlines, no Mafia members are involved in the case. But of course, that doesn't stop the media. There are several cops charged with helping to cover up Conigliaro's murder. The one who is Italian keeps getting HIS picture in the papers. HIS name mentioned repeatedly. 

This is nothing new. A little over a year ago, a big "Mafia Bust" was announced. Some Italian names were mentioned in the newspapers, along with "Gambino" crime family every few sentences. I looked up the indictment on the Internet. Among the Italian "Mafia" members are also included: Omar Hassan, Youseff Abed, Atif Abuteer, Bernard Walton, Frank Francis, Steve Gambal, John Slofkis, (and seven other non Italians) etc. Yet the papers called this a Mob case, called it a "Gambino Family Indictment," and gave out only the Italian names in the papers. 

This is why people think the so called Mafia is behind everything, and why some Italians are kept on the defensive about these accusations.
