Opening Reception
Sheldon Art Galleries
|
The Sheldon Art Galleries Presents Works by Well-known and Emerging
Italian Photographers
The Sheldon Art Galleries presents An Eye for The City: Contemporary
Italian Photography, February 8 - May 24, 2003 in the Gallery
of
Photography and the Bernoudy Gallery of Architecture. An opening
reception will be held Friday, February 21, 2003 from 5 - 7 p.m.
Gallery hours are Tuesdays, 9 a.m. - 8 p.m.; Wednesdays, 9 a.m. - 5
p.m.; Saturdays, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. and one hour prior to Sheldon
performances and during intermission.
An Eye for the City: Contemporary Italian Photography encompasses an
analysis of ways of seeing, architecture, urban studies, and how we
place ourselves in the world. The first group exhibition of
contemporary Italian photography outside Italy, this show brings
together the work of eight photographers, some internationally known,
and some only just beginning to earn recognition outside their country.
The photographers featured in this exhibition focus on aspects of the
urban experience. Organized in two sections, the first, on view in
the
Gallery of Photography, features photographers who create images that
are psychological or formal responses to the urban landscape.
Internationally known photographer Mimmo Jodice captures the surreal
incongruity of incomplete and abandoned roads on the margins of Naples.
His photographs are romantic interpretations of the Italian urban
landscape. Paola de Pietri photographs pedestrians in an urban
environment, juxtaposing the calligraphic qualities of the body in
motion against the hard formal lines of architecture. Guido Guidi,
one
of the first Italian photographers to investigate and describe the
effects of post-industrialization and progress in the 1980s, finds
beauty in the subdued palette of colors found in industrial complexes,
which through the decline of industrialization, were abandoned to ruin.
Walter Niedermayr explores Italy's highway culture. His photographs
from
a raised vantage point provide the viewer with panoramic compositions
that bring together man-made and natural elements in a modern tapestry
of the built environment.
The second section, seen in the Bernoudy Gallery of Architecture,
features photographers who provide a critique of the development of
the
urban and suburban landscape from post-war ruins, through unfettered
development, to a placeless landscape of decentralized sprawl. Included
are Ugo Mulas, Giorgio Avigdor, Vincenzo Castella, and Gabriele
Basilico. Ugo Mulas' photographs are the earliest to be featured.
His
images of the suburbs of Milan from the late 1950s are gritty street
photographs of people living alongside the ruins of war and newly built
structures. Both Giorgio Avigdor and Vincenzo Castella focus on the
jumble of differing architecture that constitute the peripheries of
Post-war urban Italy. Avigdor's color images of architecture
in 1970s
Turin critique the lack of urban planning and fractured architectural
shape of the city. Castella uses an aerial vantage point, photographing
from the tops of office buildings to show the city of today to be a
placeless environment of unplanned development. Gabriele Basilico,
probably the most important urban photographer in Italy today, creates
highly organized compositions of segments of cities besieged by road
signs and a cacophony of architectural styles. Seen together, the images
in this exhibition provide insight into the realities and poetics of
a
modern urban landscape.
The Sheldon Art Galleries is a nonprofit gallery, which hosts five
spaces permanently devoted to photography, architectural history, the
history of jazz, and children's art. The Sheldon actively supports
the
work of St. Louis artists in all mediums and features a dedicated
gallery with museum-quality exhibits by St. Louis artists, past and
present.
