COLUMBUS DAY EVENTS ACCORDING TO RICHARD ANNOTICO:
  • NYC Columbus Day Parade is World's Largest Italian-American Celebration

  • The Parade will feature Italian music, dance and street performers, many floats that depict colorful and dramatic cultural icons, over a dozen marching bands, and national and international dignitaries.
  • Remembering Why Columbus Day Matters

  • My good friend,  Rosario A. Iaconis, is arguing that we in the US must give just due to the Roman Law.  I whole heartily agree, but Christopher Columbus, Giovanni da Verrazzano, Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot) and Amerigo Vespucci, were all outstanding Explorers, Navigators, and Adventurers, and had NOTHING to do with the Spanish and Portuguese CONQUISTADORS that "raped' North and South America, and they had no concern for Roman Law, but only the Sword and the Cross.
  • Columbus BASHING Continues, While Columbus Celebration Curtailed in Syracuse, NY

  • However a  Panel Discussion, "Legacies of Columbus", is scheduled at Syracuse University sponsored by La Casita Cultural Center and the SU Native American Studies Department. intended to look beyond Columbus' legend to make a critical examination of his impact on indigenous peoples, South and Central Americans
  • What Columbus Day Really Means

  • Professor Connell gives an eye opening historical view of Columbus Day. And while I have great respect for Prof Connell, I do take issue with his insistence that we celebrate the EVENT of the European discovery of the New World, rather than The PERSON who achieved that ACCOMPLISHMENT.
  • Denver Italians Winning Columbus Day Battle

  • For ten years Denver Italians have been fighting the 'illegal' protests of Native Americans against Columbus Day Celebrations, who "symbolically" charge Columbus with genocide of indigenous peoples in North America, when he never even set foot on the Continent.
  • Columbus Day Started in Colorado

  • Strangely, that Colorado, the First State to recognize "Christopher Columbus" Day, on a bill introduced by the sole Hispanic state senator, Casimio Barela  is the location of the Nation's annual most virulent  Anti-Columbus Protest.

Italy's Republic Day - Hillary Rodham Clinton - Secretary of State
On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate the people of Italy as you celebrate your 64th Republic Day. This is an opportunity to honor the vibrancy of Italian democracy and reaffirm the shared values that are the foundation of our alliance, including freedom, equality, and respect for human rights and the rule of law.
The histories of our nations and our people have been intertwined since our earliest days -- from Christopher Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci, to the millions of Italian immigrants who helped build the United States, to the American soldiers who helped liberate Italy at the end of World War II. We are linked by strong ties of culture and commerce, and by the bonds of family and friendship.
Today we are NATO allies working side by side to seize the opportunities and meet the challenges of the 21st century. From supporting the refocused mission in Afghanistan, to curbing nuclear proliferation, combating climate change, and spurring global economic recovery, we are working together as partners to advance peace, security, and prosperity around the world.
On this Republic Day, I wish the Italian people the very best and look forward to building an even brighter future together.
