hard work of the Italian Embassy and the advocacy of proud Italian-Americans,

and all of us who are enraptured by the culture of Italy and its beautiful
language.

Dino De Laurentiis, 91, Greatest Italian Producer? Dino De Laurentiis, a mogul who moved
from Italian postwar masterpieces to Oscar-winning Fellini films, cult
flicks Barbarella and Conan the Barbarian and Hollywood smashes like Death
Wish, King Kong and the Hannibal franchise, received the 2001 Irving Thalberg
award for career achievement.
The Parade will
feature Italian music, dance and street performers, many floats that depict
colorful and dramatic cultural icons, over a dozen marching bands, and
national and international dignitaries.
My good friend,
Rosario A. Iaconis, is arguing that we in the US must give just due to
the Roman Law. I whole heartily agree, but Christopher Columbus,
Giovanni da Verrazzano, Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot) and Amerigo Vespucci,
were all outstanding Explorers, Navigators, and Adventurers, and had NOTHING
to do with the Spanish and Portuguese CONQUISTADORS that "raped' North
and South America, and they had no concern for Roman Law, but only the
Sword and the Cross.
However a
Panel Discussion, "Legacies of Columbus", is scheduled at Syracuse University
sponsored by La Casita Cultural Center and the SU Native American Studies
Department. intended to look beyond Columbus' legend to make a critical
examination of his impact on indigenous peoples, South and Central Americans
Professor Connell
gives an eye opening historical view of Columbus Day. And while I have
great respect for Prof Connell, I do take issue with his insistence that
we celebrate the EVENT of the European discovery of the New World, rather
than The PERSON who achieved that ACCOMPLISHMENT.
For ten years
Denver Italians have been fighting the 'illegal' protests of Native Americans
against Columbus Day Celebrations, who "symbolically" charge Columbus with
genocide of indigenous peoples in North America, when he never even set
foot on the Continent.
Strangely, that
Colorado, the First State to recognize "Christopher Columbus" Day, on a
bill introduced by the sole Hispanic state senator, Casimio Barela
is the location of the Nation's annual most virulent Anti-Columbus
Protest.

Immediately
after her victory, Francesa Schiavone climbed into a section of the stands,
to a block of Italians wearing T-shirts bearing the words 'Schiavone:
nothing is impossible', to be swallowed by their ecstatic embrace,
and only then returned to field an on-court call from Italian president
Giorgio Napolitano, then sang the Italian National Anthem.
Francesca Schiavone,
at 29, and 17th seeded... beat 7th seeded Australian Samantha
Stosur was the favorite, of course, after beating four-time champ Justine
Henin, No. 1 Serena Williams, and No. 4 Jelena Jankovic.
The 5th rank,
28-year-old Elena Dementieva will play the 17th ranked, 29-year-old
Italian Francesca Schiavone in the semis, who upended No.3 Caroline Wozniacki
to become the first Italian woman to reach a Slam semi in the Open Era.
Italy's
Republic Day - Hillary Rodham Clinton - Secretary of State On
behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate
the people of Italy as you celebrate your 64th Republic Day. This is an
opportunity to honor the vibrancy of Italian democracy and reaffirm the
shared values that are the foundation of our alliance, including freedom,
equality, and respect for human rights and the rule of law.
The histories of our nations and
our people have been intertwined since our earliest days -- from Christopher
Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci, to the millions of Italian immigrants who
helped build the United States, to the American soldiers who helped liberate
Italy at the end of World War II. We are linked by strong ties of culture
and commerce, and by the bonds of family and friendship.
Today we are NATO allies working
side by side to seize the opportunities and meet the challenges of the
21st century. From supporting the refocused mission in Afghanistan, to
curbing nuclear proliferation, combating climate change, and spurring global
economic recovery, we are working together as partners to advance peace,
security, and prosperity around the world.
On this Republic Day, I wish the
Italian people the very best and look forward to building an even brighter
future together.
